Chapter Ten
THERE HAD BEEN NO WORD from anywhere. Nate was puzzled. How could a young woman, as pretty and as individual in character as Miss Wilkins have simply disappeared? Nobody seemed to have seen her, though he had received assurances from every sheriff along the railway line that they had placed men on lookout for her at every station. Nate had sent a return telegram to Mr Macomber, keeping him abreast of the lack of news, and even as he wrote it ready for Aston Merryweather to send it, Nate had cursed himself for not being able to find her for them.
Mr Macomber had wasted no time upon receiving Nateâs telegram and had informed Nate by return that he and his wife, Annabelle â as well as their three children along with their Nanny â would be setting out, immediately, from Boston to come and join the hunt in Montana. They had contacted every one of Miss Wiltonâs friends, written to distant relatives â everyone they could think of, and there was no sign of her back East. They were convinced that Miss Wilkins was on her way to Montana, and there was no dissuading them. Their train was due to arrive in Billings the next day, and Nate had assured them that he would be there to meet them.
Dissatisfied with the progress that other lawmen seemed to have made, though he conceded that they probably had other seemingly more pressing matters to attend to, Nate had decided to head to Billings early, to ask around for information about Miss Wilkins himself. Heâd intended to travel alone but seated beside him, on the dashboard of the roomy old barouche he had hired to fetch the Macombers back to Eagle Creek, was Tom Greening. At first, heâd not wanted the company. Now, he was just glad of his friendâs support.
âYou have to stop moping like this,â Tom Greening said, flicking the reins to guide the horses around a particularly nasty rut in the road. âYouâre no use to the Macombers or to Miss Wilkins if you have already talked yourself out of finding her.â
âTom, I know you mean well, but donât you think I am telling myself the very same things?â
âIâm sure you are. Yet I havenât heard you outline the details of our plan of attack. I know that isnât like you. Iâve served under you in the Army and acted as a deputy from time to time since I came to Eagle Creek. You never do anything without having an exact idea of how to go about it.â
âBut there is simply no clue as to where I might start,â Nate explained. âA journey that long, youâd expect someone to have seen her, or spoken with her. Everyone who has responded to my pleas for information has said they canât find a soul who even vaguely resembles the description I sent. She didnât strike me as the retiring type in her letters, so I doubt she would have kept to herself and I cannot believe that so unique a young woman could ever go unnoticed.
